How to maintain your gym-floor

Scott Floor Company, Inc. guarantees you their finish for one year, providing that you follow a few simple maintenance steps daily. Below is an outline of these steps. However, we can not guarantee the finish if the floor is abused or not properly cared for. We consider abuse as the following: the constant use of street shoes instead of gym shoes, excess dust from lack of running a dust mop over the floor regularly. Always remember that dust can be your worst enemy and will most likely cause scratching which in turn will cause the finish to become dull and slippery. Therefore, here is some information which should help you keep the gym floor in good condition. This requires maintenance programs; the following procedures and methods have proven to obtain excellent results.

1) To generally clean a finished gym-floor and remove stains and spills: Use a cleaning solution of ½ oz. of any good detergent up to a gallon of cold water. Remember cold water will brighten the finish while hot water will cloud it.

2) The dust mops used on the gym-floor should be treated with Scott Floor Tone mop treatment. Treated mops will help prevent shoe marks, keep dust and grit from the floor surface, prevent the build up of bacteria, and help maintain the durability and life of the finish.

3) You should have dust mops that are to be used only in the gym. Do not use these mops on other types of floors because there will usually be an entirely different type of soil or dirt on other floors not found on the gym-floor.

  • You should have two mops for each gym floor. The mops should be 48" to 60" in length.
  • Use only a water soluable mop treatment on these mops.
  • To determine the amount of solution needed, apply 1 ounce of mop treatment to every 6 inches of the mop head.
  • Spray the mop head evenly, saturating the entire mop. Then, do not use mop for at least 12 hours. Allow it to cure. If the mop does not cure properly, the floor can become very slippery and could cause streaking.
  • The mop should be retreated every three days. Use only ½ of the mop treatment that you used the for the first treatment.
  • After a week, the mop needs to be washed. If these mops are changed on a regular basis this will insure the best performance from your gym-floor finish.

4) To remove blood and drink spills, dampen the mop with 1 ounce of a good concentrate of soap mixed with 1 gallon of cold water. If spills are not removed, the floor will become sticky and dirty in these areas.

5) If for some reason the floor becomes slippery, dampen the mop with a solution by adding 1 or 2 ounces of concentrated soap to one gallon of warm water. It may take a second damp mopping to help correct this problem.

6) Dirty dust mops cause slippery floors. Also, the floor can become slick from body grease and atmospheric grease caused by the use of fuel oil and from industrial plants operating near you.

7) Always use mats in the entrance ways. Remember that dust, grit, and soils are the floors' worst enemy. Keep your floors clean and free of dust and grit. With proper maintenance, the gym finish should remain in good condition for one or two years depending on the playing and cleaning conditions.
